Food for thought for the week! :)
Here's something interesting i read in
365 ways to change the world. Its an engaging little book filled with practical ideas for changing the world every single day of the year.
I just skimmed through and decided to read: 'Be a Good Neighbor'.
It says:
In these days of high speed communication, you can feel close to someone thousands of miles away. The sense of a global village is being used by NABUUR (pronounced neighbor), a Dutch foundation, to help give urban and rural communities in developing countries (which they call villages) access to the resources they need to solve their problems: information, expertise, experience gained by projects that work elsewhere, ideas for funding.
How NABUUR works:
1 A community is in urgent need of help. After an assessment, the village is given a page on the website
http://www.nabuur.com/ and a rep of the local community describes an urgent problem that requires solving.
2 Ppl who want to help sign up as virtual neighbours of the village. They work together as good neighbours and provide answers.
3 Best solutions are put forward to the village. A rep will then discuss it with the community.
4 The community will decide what to do and the solution are then implemented.
5 A new problem may be posted and the process starts again!
The neighbours help by searching for info on the Net, contacting useful orgns, using creativity and skills, and providing expertise and advice.
NABUUR is the brainchild of Siegfried Woldhek.
This NABUUR initiative sounds really interesting! I'm going to check it out in my free time! There are many people in this world who are truly in need of help but who do not have the technological means or basic literacy to address the problems they face in their community.
If we can bring about change that will lead to greater joy and peace in this world, we should.
Cheers,
Gwen
